It is harder for managers and supervisors to identify bullying as the problem if the bystanders are silent about it, if others who witness workplace bullying decide to “mind their own business,” out of fear of rocking the boat, or perhaps being the bullies next target. Bystanders need to know the power they have but also know they will not be penalized for doing the right thing.
So how do we do this?
Let me start by giving you a bullying analogy by using a campfire. To have a fire you need 3 elements, Ignition, fuel and oxygen. The bully is the igniter; they're the ones who start up the confrontation. The victim is the fuel and the oxygen is the bystanders. Without oxygen you cannot have a fire. I will demonstrate to your employees how the bystanders have the power to take the oxygen away from the bully which will create a motivating and safe work environment.
