Workplace Bullying
Bullying is a pattern of aggressive, demeaning or aggressive behaviour towards another employee. Bullying is the strong taking advantage of the weak over and over again – it is deliberate. It demoralizes employees. Sometimes, it is very blatant, like being embarrassed in front of other co-workers or spreading lies. Often, it is far more subtle, such as giving the wrong time for meetings or setting the target up to fail in assignments. The bully or bullies get some gratification out of their behaviour, and the target ends up feeling mistreated and disrespected.
For instance, a workplace bully might use the office's "Water Cooler Corner" to circulate a lie about a co-worker. An employee who dislikes a co-worker for personal reasons may incessantly criticize everything that co-worker does. Such actions may not even be clearly defined in the company’s policies and procedures. However, the damage they cause can unplug the tub and demoralize the employee to the point where their health decreases and they start calling in sick or worse than that, they call a lawyer and sue the company.
So what can we do?
Educating your employees in building a respectful working environment where people are treated with dignity and demonstrating to the “Bullies” that bad behaviour usually receives bad results and good behaviour usually receives good results.
